An adjective is a word that describes a noun (a person, place, animal, or thing) or a pronoun. It tells us more about what something is like: its size, colour, shape, quality, or number.

Without adjectives:
Riya has a bag and a pencil.

With adjectives:
Riya has a red bag and a sharp pencil.

See how the second sentence helps us picture things better?

Common adjectives:

Adjective What it tells us Example
good quality She is a good singer.
fast speed A cheetah is a fast animal.
small size I have a small puppy.
red colour He wore a red cap.
best the highest quality You are my best friend.

Remember: An adjective answers questions like What kind?, Which one?, or How many? about a noun. If a word describes a noun or pronoun, it is an adjective!
