Definitions of Adjectives: Grade 6 English Entrance Exam
An adjective is a word that describes a noun (a person, place, animal, or thing) or a pronoun. It tells us more about what something is like: its size, colour, shape, quality, or number.
Without adjectives:
Riya has a bag and a pencil.
With adjectives:
Riya has a red bag and a sharp pencil.
See how the second sentence helps us picture things better?
Common adjectives:
| Adjective | What it tells us | Example |
|---|---|---|
| good | quality | She is a good singer. |
| fast | speed | A cheetah is a fast animal. |
| small | size | I have a small puppy. |
| red | colour | He wore a red cap. |
| best | the highest quality | You are my best friend. |
Remember: An adjective answers questions like What kind?, Which one?, or How many? about a noun. If a word describes a noun or pronoun, it is an adjective!
